Bush 'Shoe Thrower' Freed from Jail
The Iraqi journalist Muntadhar al-Zaidi who was jailed for throwing his shoes on former US president George W Bush at a press conference in Baghdad on 14 December last year was released on Sept 15, 2009. Initially Muntadhar al-Zaidi was sentenced to three years for hurling his shoes at the press conference where he had shouted "it is the farewell kiss, you dog," before anyone could react, he threw his other shoe at President George Bush and said “This is from the widows, the orphans and those who were killed in Iraq!” After this incident there were mixed opinions among Iraqis. Some people thought that he was a Hero who raised voice against US occupation of Iraq while some others thought that his act was wrong and against Arab traditions of honoring guests.
Del Porto, at 6’6”, has thus become the tallest Grand Slam winner; he is also the fifth youngest man to win the US open. For Federer, this was the 21st grand slam final.
Muntadhar al-Zaidi was released from jail on “conditional discharge” after serving one year sentence. According to Iraqi law “conditional discharge” may release a prisoner after serving three quarters of his term in jail on good behavior basis .
After being released from prison he was given a warm welcome by his family members, media staff and supporters across the country. During a press conference at television station Dhirgham, his brother Uday Al-Zaidi said "We are happy, like any detainee's family would be happy for the release of its son after the bitter time he spent in jail,". At the press conference Muntadhar al-Zaidi said that he was beaten with steel cables, pipes, and received electric shocks while in custody. He said after this incident he was kept in unheated place bound by chains fastened around his ankles.
Muntadhar al-Zaidi said he was protesting against the presence of American troops in Iraq and he thought about the people who were killed or displaced without any reason in Iraq.
During press conference he said “I was roaming throughout the past years of the war in our scorched land and I was seeing with my own eyes the pains of the victims and hearing the weeping of the grieving women and orphans,” and “Shame was chasing me, like an ugly name for my helplessness.” At that time he promised himself to take revenge and said "I got my chance, and I didn't miss it,"
