Candidate donations : A candidate donation is a donation of money, goods or services that is made for use in the candidate's campaign. A candidate donation can be received in several different ways, including when a candidate is provided with free or discounted goods or services; sells over-valued goods or services; or receives credit on favourable terms. Volunteer labour is not a donation.

Donations made up of contributions : A donation can be made up in part by funds contributed by more than one person (contributors), for example where there is a collection or whip-round for a candidate's campaign. The total proceeds of a collection or whip-round are treated as a donation under the Electoral Finance Act.

Anonymous donations : An anonymous donation is a donation made in such a way that the financial agent who receives the donation does not know the identity of the donor and could not, in the circumstances, reasonably be expected to know the identity of the donor.
