Hiring at the time of Recession

As the recession is fading away, employers who had cut jobs in the last years are slower in hiring them back. A small businessman whether in Washington, or North Carolina is saying that it will take at least a few months before they would begin hiring again. The caution shown by the businesses is very normal to be seen at the end of time of recession.

As was seen in the 2001 recession times, the employers did not start hiring employees until 2003; two years after the economic recovery had taken place. This is due to the fact that labor is one of the biggest expenses in any company, whether big or small. Many economists are now saying that healthy employment will start only after 2013.

Companies at the present moment are trying to hire cheaper temporary staff to fill the gaps or are attempting to squeeze more work out of existing employees that are left after the recession. Some companies are also slashing working hours of their employees to cope up with the recession. Even those companies that have started hiring employees in the recent months have admitted that the hiring is just temporary, based on the economic scenario. Although most businesses are seeing signs of recovery, but are hesitant of hiring new employees until they see several months of rising sales. Small rise in economy has not translated into job creation.

The chief economist of National Federation of Independent Business remarked that about 7%-10% of the small businesses have added to their workforce in the second quarter of the year, while 25% of the businesses have cut jobs.

Power Curbers, a small manufacturing company in North Carolina says that they have been able to break even only after shedding about 36 percent of their staff. The owner, Dyke Messinger says that he is not planning any more jobs cutting this year. In the town of Middlebury, the Jayco RV Factory's CEO Wilber Bontrager, says that his firm is hiring just 1300 employees as against 2400 employees before the recession times. Even existing employees are in danger of being sacked as the winter season would approach resulting in the slowing down of business.
