 Microsoft-Nokia: The Office Deal Two biggest companies in the world, Nokia and Microsoft are expected to sign a deal with each other, where they intend to make the Microsoft's Office suite of applications available on devices made by the world's top cell phone manufacturer, Nokia. Microsoft leaders in software are planning to come up with next version of Office, in which they intend to make browser based version of Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and OneNote available on Nokia phones. With this latest version of Office, the company that has been ruling the market for its office version on the desktop will now try to expand its productivity by offering the same on the phone. Till date only those phones that have their own native versions of Office were able to run Microsoft's Windows Mobile software. But with the expected latest version of Office, the user will be able to run programs like Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and OneNote inside Safari and Firefox besides Microsoft's Internet Explorer. This means that now Office can be run on Linux-based machines and a variety of mobile phones will be able to enjoy this latest feature. Windows and Office are still the most important software from Microsoft and are still the vital source for company's profit. Microsoft has always been trying to strengthen its hold in the market by looking for ways that will help them to connect to devices where people can have access to information on their mobiles besides on their PCs. Though Nokia already has a license that allows its phones to connect to Exchange servers using Microsoft's ActiveSync protocol, but this will definitely make it more convenient and handy to use Windows and Office on the Nokia phones. It is not for the first time that Nokia and Microsoft have struck a deal. In 2007 also Microsoft struck a deal with Nokia to have Windows Live services run on the Finnish company's phones. This deal is the result of the Microsoft's continuous efforts of trying hard to figure out ways to stand the tough competition from Nokia in Europe as well as Apple's iPhone, RIM's BlackBerry, and an emerging threat from devices running Google's Android operating system. Though both the companies are not giving any details about the deal yet; further issues are going to be discussed at an alliance on August 12, 2009.
